MIT School of Management, Pune starts voter awareness campaign
CHALLENGE
The dwindling voting percentage during elections, both in urban and rural areas, is not a healthy sign of democracy. Even a vast section of the educated class refrain from exercising their franchise during elections. While some are still ignorant about their voting rights, many are totally in different towards the polling process. This apart, another major reason for voters not being able to take part in the voting process is that they fail to register their names in the voters list in time.Students of MIT School of Management who are a part of Student Activity Forum Environment (SAFE) have come forward to create awareness among voters. The outfit had organised zero waste campaign, women empowerment programme, etc. Now considering that voting is important for democracy, members of YIN along with SAFE have decided to create awareness about voting. Under the plan, these members will start voting awareness campaigns in their college and gradually extend it to other colleges. Thereafter, they will spread similar poll awareness programmes in residential societies and rural areas.

We have prepared a plan to start a systematic voters education and electoral participation (SVEEP) programme at district level. College students are major stake holders in this programme. If any groups come forward, we will provide them with all campaign material that we have prepared which include pamphlets and audio visual materials. We will also guide them during the campaign.

There are around 17,000 students in various colleges of MIT. Our initiative to ensure that all those eligible and have their names registered in the voters list vote on the polling day. Rahul Karad, Dean MIT School of Government, is the main brain behind Bhartiya Chatra Sansad. The aim of this event is to spread awareness about politics. India is becoming a youth power and youth are responsible for India’s progress. Voting for the right candidate will help get good elected representatives who will play a proper role in India’s growth story. We are also requesting other colleges to do similar activities. Students from another colleges can also join us in this initiative of ours.

Our efforts will now be concentrated to spread awareness about voting. We will be making every eligible electorate in MIT to cast their vote during the ensuing State Elections. Our effort is not only to ensure that voters cast their votes but also follow the rules while exercising their franchise. I appeal to people to support our initiative.

We have come up with a new issue Voting Right. Women voters play significant roles in electing the right candidates. Their votes matter a lot. The trend is changing from women empowerment to women in power.
