YIN team undertakes an initiative to solve the traffic problems of Kolhapur City

The city of Kolhapur is facing several traffic issues. The growing number of vehicles in the city have further added to this problem. This has resulted into several issues such as traffic congestion, air pollution, sound pollution, etc. Moreover, the citizens are seen regularly breaking the traffic signals. Some of the traffic signals are in broken condition and the Municipal Corporation has taken no steps to repair them.

To counter this issue, the YIN team from Kolhapur planned to conduct a survey based on these issues. In this regard, students from DRK College of Commerce sought a formal permission from the city control department of Kolhapur. The YIN team selected 12 signals from different locations of the city and appointed teams to keep a track on them. On 12th and 15th March, 2015 the YIN team were present at their allocated venues between 11 am to 1 pm in the morning and 4.30 to 6.30 pm in the evening to identify the problems and noted down their observations.

The YIN team clicked various photos through their mobile phones of people breaking traffic signals, not following traffic rules and regulations and also of traffic cops who were not responding to this situation. All these photos were later published in the next day’s leading newspaper. After this activity, the traffic police took all the necessary steps to counter the current traffic problems faced by the city. The signals that were not in working conditions were repaired by the Municipal Corporation. In addition to this, the zebra crossing belts across the city were repainted and strict action was taken against people who didn’t follow the traffic regulations. This initiative taken by YIN had a positive impact on the traffic system of Kolhapur city.
