Vasantrao Naik college promotes wetcomposting

CHALLENGE

VasantraoNaikCollege in Aurangabad has a lush green campus with huge trees. Trees produce a lot of dry waste in the form of leaves. This enormous waste which was hitherto being dumped into a bin is now being channelised by the college’s YoungInspiratorsNetwork (YIN) to create manure. This wetcomposting project includes segregation of wetanddry garbage. A large pit has been dug in the college premises and wetanddry waste is put into this pit.
Help is being taken from nearby #restaurants and #hotels, asking them to send their wetwaste to the college. This helps the composting pit.
Manure which will be the end result of this exercise, will be used in the collegegardens. The next phase will see students start similar projects in other colleges of the city. Also, the sale of manure will bring in revenue for the college. The students also plan to spread this message in nearby villages. OneVillage OneProject is the aim of the students. VasantraoNaik Education Prasarak Mandal will be providing financial help for the project.

EXPERT ADVICE

Chemical fertilisers deteriorate the quality of soil. #OrganicManure can be created by using leaves of trees. This manure is useful for trees. OrganicManure has the capacity to hold water, thereby decreasing the amount of water needed by trees. Manure increases the resistance and productivity of trees. By implementing this solution from YIN, both the problem of fertilisers and garbage disposal is solved. Anna Vaidya.

Wetcomposting offers two solutions in one stroke. Firstly, it produces #manure and secondly, it solves the garbage issue. It is important to create awareness about this. With the help of YIN and National Service Scheme, we will be presenting street plays to create awareness.

We were thinking of getting into some social service activity and YIN has given us that direction. We are going to make our OrganicManure project successful.

We get lessons for socialcommitment, right from childhood. However, the opportunity for practical implementation has come with YIN. We are getting the chance to bring our thoughts to the fore because of this group. Earlier, dry leaves were simply burnt. Now, we are creating OrganicManure.
