Solapur students begin self-defence training

CHALLENGE

Women have moved past their traditional role of being homemakers and have started moving towards education. They have made a mark in several fields already. But due to some anti-social elements in the society, these women are still not safe. It is evident by the many cases of violenceagainstwomen and sexualharassment that women are still not safe. Keeping in mind this insecurityofwomen, the YIN team of Nagesh Karjagi Orchid College of Engineering and Technology has decided to initiate selfdefence training for women. The students under the Women’s Safety and Security initiative will provide basic selfdefence training to women. They will cover topics like how to protect yourself in adverse circumstances, energy and the use of technology to protect yourself.

        Ashwini Sanap,

A woman has to play multiple roles, being a mother and a working professional at the same time, who has to deal with people of various walks in the society. For this, she needs to have confidence to mingle with them. I have been trying to share and provide various safetymeasures and tips to girls and women. Having mere knowledge about safety measures is incomplete without self-confidence which needs to be worked upon. This YIN initiative will act as a role model for other students and women as well.

It is a known fact that womenareunsafe even though they are safe. Even though there are strict laws against harassment, several incidents against women are occurring. There is a greater need for selfdefence training for women. This initiative, by the YIN team, is truly inspiring. It will give rise to self-confidence among women.

Violence against women is increasing day by day and this is a matter of concern. Women are stepping out for earning and they should know the selfdefensetechniques as it has became a need of the hour. Considering the need for protection, we will be carrying out training in self-defence techniques for women. We will also carry out guidance sessions, training and awareness initiatives, which will help to develop self-confidence among women.

Women and girls are being mentally harassed with the use of socialmedia as well as various applications of mobile phones. This is creating psychological tension in women. Girls face eve-teasing and other kinds of harassment on roads many times. In the backdrop of ever rising crimes, particularly against women, they need to become stronger, independent and self-reliant in protecting themselves. Because of the YIN initiative undertaken in our college, girls will inherit self-confidence and boldness. This will also encourage other students to come forward and show greater participation.
