Satara students make arrangement for easy library access

CHALLENGE

Colleges under the Rayat Shikshan Sanstha of  Satara have several granted and non-granted courses. Considering various courses, many books are being added to the libraries of these colleges. Due to this excessive addition, libraries are running out of space, causing difficulties to students to look for the desire book. To address this issue, members of YIN from the Yashwantrao Chavan Institute of Science came up with two systems. One system is Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited’s ( MKCL) Libreria, a library management system and another ICT based system. These systems will not only help the internal students but the external students as well.

ACTION PLAN

Taking it as a pilot project, the students have introduced Libreria system developed by the MKCL in YCIS . This system will help students to locate desired book from the bunch of books in the library. Students are also thinking of decentralisation of the library where every department will have separate departmental library. This will also reduce load from the central library. Students are also planning to come up with the separate application which will provide access to the subscribed books, literature on computer or smartphones.

We have also introduced ICT based system where the distance learning students and other students can access various reference books, research articles, science magazines through the www.ycisslibrary.weekly.com. Students can also access various paid generals, encyclopedia, e-papers, etc. through this system. Also, students can resolve their queries with the option ‘Ask a Librarian’. This system is also accessible for students other than colleges under Rayat Shikshan Sanstha.

Internet connectivity is being introduced in various libraries of the Rayat Shikshan Sanstha which will help to connect all libraries as well as other reference material, etc. Following this, the libraries will act as Knowledge research centre to students. Digital library, institutional re-position will help to access the E-General, E-Books to see the world.

Every college should have department-wise library which will save a student’s time to access the desired book. Android apps will also help students to access the book anywhere, anytime. Also there should be maps, researches, cultural books, language tools etc for students.

We are taking up the issue as a YIN activity, we are also getting support from the principal, Head of Departments, Library and the desired changes are being made. This is benefiting the students of the college and it will also help them in the future. I feel proud to be a part of YIN.
