BJ Medical College students spread health awareness

CHALLENGE

Research by students of BJ Medical College shows that children in villages around Pune lack awareness in health and hygiene. This is why, the students under the aegis of their social arm, Prachiti, have been visiting villages in Shindewadi and Baramati in Pune district to conduct day-long health and hygiene awareness drives regularly.

Modus Operandi
Prachiti members contact village schools or the village sarpanch to organise these camps. According to student Amrita Mande, the group educates little children about the need to cut their nails, wash their hair and maintain overall hygiene. “We display charts to teach them how vegetables, grains and fruits provide the necessary vitamins and keep diseases at bay,” Mande said.

“People in villages are usually unaware about basic health needs. The Prachiti group of BJ MedicalCollege is doing a commendable job. While carrying out this noble task, they will face practical difficulties. As a medical professional, I can extend help by guiding them and helping them develop necessary skills.”

“Our students are doing a commendable job. Such activities should not be restricted to allopathy. I feel doctors from other streams can also get involved in similar activities such as Prachiti. There is a clear need to serve people in the rural areas where basic healthcare facilities are deficient.”
