CHALLENGE

The GarbageIssue is becoming a huge concern in Kolhapur at the moment. Members of the Young Inspirators ’Network (YIN) of the Delivering Change Foundation of the Gopal Krishna Gokhale College have decided to collect garbage and convert it into #compost and eventually turn it into manure. To start with, they collected nirmalya during the Ganesh Festival earlier this year and handed it over to green NGO Nisargamitra for composting. In the future, the students will be collaborating with Gram Panchayats, Zilla Parishads, and Municipal Corporations to help solve the Garbage Problem through the composting method.

ACTION PLAN

The students are going to create #awareness among citizens about #segregation of Wet And Dry Garbage in households. To achieve this aim, they will organise Street Plays, Powadas, discussion and lecture series. They will be visiting schools and colleges and will demonstrate Composting Methods with the help of experts. They will also show how employment can be created through composting. They will also be visiting five villages and create awareness among villagers about composting through street plays.

It is possible to create #manure out of Nirmalya and then sell it. Through this it will also be possible to address the issue of unemployment while boosting the cause of Dignity Of Labour. However, society does not view these initiatives properly. It is laudable that #YIN members are working in this direction for the Betterment Of Society. Not only should society #support such causes, but should actively come forward and participate in them.

The youth from the college are aware of their responsibilities to society. They are experiencing the trouble that the city faces due to the Garbage Issue. Hence, they have decided to carry out the garbage to compost project. They have also started a vermi composting project on the college premises. Staff members too often #guide the students about dealing with the garbage issue. We also organize #workshops to understand the subject better.

When we approached mandals seeking nirmalya from them, their response was very positive. They also praised the initiative. However, we do not want to stop here. It is our dream that everyone should take steps to help create compost from garbage. To achieve this, we will be approaching every section of society.

Not only do cities face the Garbage Issue, rural areas too suffer from this. However, there is very little discussion about this. It is seen that Plastic Bags, bottles and other glass objects are seen littered in fields. This is affecting the environment. To tackle this problem, there is a need to create awareness. For this, we will be taking the help of many organisations who are working in this field.
