Through the National Service Scheme (NSS) we have been involved in many cleaning activities. The hill behind our college is littered and therefore, we have decided to extend the cleanliness drive to the hill. Along with other waste, the number of plastic bags thrown all over the hill is huge. We had recently carried out a drive to clear the plastic, but now we will take up the drive more often.

CHALLENGE
Popular hills in the city like Hanuman Tekdi behind Fergusson College and Vetal Tekdi behind Law College attract a lot of walkers. Invariably, litter follows.
The hills in the city are becoming garbage dumping grounds. Growinggarbage is posing a threat to the biodiversity on the hills, which are lungs of the city. It is frequented by drinkers too, who leave behind broken glasses which hurt morning walkers and pets. Considering this serious concern, many students from FergussonCollege have decided to come together and clean the hill behind their own college. -

We have been picking up litter from Vetal Tekdi and other areas. We are happy that the students of Fergusson College are now willing to join this campaign. We appeal to students from other nearby colleges too, to join the cleanliness drive on Vetal Tekdi so that the entire hill can be covered under the drive in less time. DGPS has contacted nearby colleges for the same.

Most of the garbage comprises plastic bags, broken glasses, cigarette butts etc, which is an eyesore on the beautiful hill. So now we wish to focus on cleaning this hill which is a treasure for the college as well. Though we have been clearing garbage from the campus, we will now frequently do this on the hill as well.

The cleaning activity imbibes a sense of duty and responsibility in us. The campus belongs to us and we clean it. Now we need to do the same for the hill near our college which is falling prey to waste. This will also create awareness among students about keeping their surrounding clean and preserving the hills in the city.

As we are working towards a garbage free campus, we also owe the responsibility to keep the hill, which is so near to our campus, free of garbage. We are reaching out to students across faculties to seek more participation in this special endeavour to conserve the hill and create awareness.

Fergusson College has always been involved in social welfare activities. The Deccan Education Society (DES) which runs the college holds many such activities for students and others as well. The decision to clean the hill by students is laudable. They have been cleaning the campus often. Now they would take up the responsibility to clean the hill behind the college.
